Kaplnka sv. Rócha

Kaplnka

Kaplnka sv.

A város lakói ezekben az időkben fordultak imáikkal Horvátország védőszentjéhez, Szent Rókushoz, melyet a környék településeinek horvát nemzetiségű lakosai tanácsára tették. A horvát telepesek a XVII.

A kápolna északi falán lévő freskók a járványban elhunytak temetését mutatják be. A freskó a városi kocsist, Csatlóczkyt ábrázolja, ahogy a kocsiján elszállítja a városból a járvány áldozatait arra a helyre, amit ma „Pataksornak” neveznek. Ezekre a szomorú időkre emlékeztet a kápolna belsejében a bejárati ajtó feletti latin nyelvű felirat is. 1931-ben a kolerajárvány kitörésének 100. évfordulójára a kápolnától délre egy emlékkeresztet állítottak. 2006-ban, a szomorú esemény 175. évfordulóján a kápolna falán emléktáblát lepleztek le. A kápolna belső falán elhelyezett emléktáblán a járvány áldozatainak nevei szerepelnek.

Szent Rókus francia ferencesrendi szerzetes, Horvátország védőszentje, az orvosok, gyógyszerészek, kórházak, földművesek, műtárgykereskedők, pestisben szenvedők és más fertőző betegek védelmezője. 1295-ben született a dél-franciaországi Montpellier városában. A katolikus egyház sokat tisztelt szentje. Számos illusztráción a lábán lévő pestisfekélyre mutat.

Chapel of St. Roch

The Chapel of St. Roch stands on the hill in the extravillain of the cadastral area of Moldava nad Bodvou. It was built in 1833 in honour of the patron Saint Roch and in memory of the victims of the cholera epidemic that broke out in the town in 1831.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the plague spread in the town and its surroundings. The epidemic resulted in the complete depopulation of municipalities in the region. In 1715 only 44 houses out of a total of 180 houses remained inhabited in the town. Another major blow to human health was the cholera epidemic in 1831, which spread to this area from western Ukraine. According to census statistics from 1828, 2 281 people were living in 279 houses in the town. The epidemic claimed 212 lives in six weeks. In 1872, another epidemic broke out during which further 34 people were killed. At this time, the inhabitants of the town turned with their prayers to the patron saint of Croatia – Saint Roch. They did so under the influence of Croatian settlers living in the surrounding villages. The name of the nearby village of Chorváty also points to the presence of the settlers of this nationality in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Thanksgiving masses and pilgrimages are held in the chapel every August in memory of the victims of the epidemics. The chapel is only opened during the mass. The building was renovated in the late 1990s. In its interior, a 19th-century altarpiece by an unknown painter depicting Saint Roch can be seen. Murals on the north wall of the chapel depict the burial of those who died during the epidemic. The original black and white painting was restored at the end of the 20th century and complemented with bright colours. The fresco depicts the town’s coachman Csatlóczky transporting the victims of the epidemic out of the town in his cart to the place what is known as “Pataksor”. The Latin inscription above the entrance also reminds these sad times. In 1931, a memorial cross was erected south of the chapel on the occasion of the centenary of the cholera outbreak. In 2006, 175 years after this sad event, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the chapel wall. The plaque placed on the inside wall of the chapel shows the names of the victims of the epidemic.

Saint Roch is the patron saint of Croatia, protector of doctors, pharmacists, hospitals, peasants, art dealers, and sufferers from plague, cholera, and other contagious diseases. He was born in 1295 in Montpellier, southern France. He is one of the revered figures in the Catholic Church. He is usually depicted as a pilgrim with a moustache and hat with a dog on his side, mostly holding a sword, stick, or a bag in his hand. In many illustrations, he points to the plague ulcer he has on his leg.

Kapelle des hl. Rochus
